Tuning |
The adjustment of the strings to be in tune at standard pitch,
A=440 Hz or CPS (cycles per second). Should be done at least twice
per year, once in the wet season, once in the dry season.
In concert venues, pianos are tuned before each performance;
in recording studios, they are tuned before each recording session.

|
Regulating |
The adjustment of the action parts to design specifications for optimal
performance of the action. Should be done when the repetition
of the action is poor or uneven.

|
Voicing |
Also called tone regulating. The manipulation of the hardness/softness
of the hammer felt to produce the desired tone quality. Should
be done when the tone of the piano is too soft, loud, harsh,
or uneven from register to register.

|
Pitch Raising
|
The tightening of the general tension level of a piano that
has dropped below standard pitch to prepare for fine tuning,
to compensate for the downward effect of massive tension changes.
Should be done after long periods between tunings, or tuning
instability.
